Property

Saint Bernard's Church is steward of two properties and five buildings in the town of Bernardsville.
Located at 88 Claremont Road, the church building was originally designed in the Gothic Revival style, then later expanded, by the New York architectural firm of Napoleon LeBrun & Sons.
The cornerstone was laid on July 8, 1897 and the building opened on June 16, 1898.
By 1915 a full cycle of stained glass windows, produced by the studio of Charles E. Kempe (1837-1907) in England, was set in place. The windows depict events in the life and ministry of Christ, as well as famous figures of the biblical and patristic ages, including Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Saint John Baptist, Saint Paul, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Saint Augustine and Saint Columba.

Located several hundred feet to the east of the church building is the Parish House (1912).
This building, which is home to the Parish Office, The Children’s Center, the parish kitchen, staff offices, the Parish Library, and the classrooms of the Church School, as well as the Great Hall, was designed by architect and parishioner Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (1847-1918). Like the church building it is in the Gothic tradition, although it has been described playfully and truthfully as “starved Gothic”, owing to its visual austerity.
From October 24, 2004 until the present, the Great Hall of the Parish House has served as the place of Sunday worship for the parish, and will continue to do so until the completion of the church rebuild program. The Hall has been outfitted with an electronic Allen organ, as well as a wooden reredos and altar.

On Stevens Street, behind the church property and adjacent to the upper parking lot, is the Rectory (1910).
The property at 88 Claremont in the summertime.
